(Ottawa, ON) Today, Member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria, Mark Eyking, reiterated the Federal Government’s support for Fort McMurray, stating “All Cape Bretoners have a connection to Alberta and particularly Fort McMurray with so many of our loved ones working out West in the oil sands.”
Eyking went on to say “The Federal Government has mobilized a number of Canadian Forces aircraft and crew that are assisting with the Fort McMurray wildfire and more are on standby if required. The Department of National Defence has also supplied helicopters to evacuate people as needed.”
Prime Minister Trudeau spoke with Premier Notley and has offered the federal government’s “total support” and further assistance in the long term.
Minister Goodale stated “The Federal Government is monitoring the situation and is ready to act on a moment’s notice.” And that “ The full emergency management plan of the governments of Canada – federal, provincial, municipal – has clicked into place,” “We’re assisting with geometrics and satellite imagery so that Alberta can properly track the movement of this beast of a fire.”
Eyking is encouraging those who can to donate to the Red Cross and wants to assure Cape Bretoners that the federal government is doing everything it can to assist those affected and is monitoring the situation as it continues to evolve.
