NEWS RELEASE: Farmer’s Market Relocation Announced

Media Release

June 16, 2018

For Immediate Release

(Sydney, NS): Today, Mark Eyking, Member of Parliament for Sydney – Victoria, joined Pauline Singer, Manager of the Cape Breton Farmer’s Market and owner of Mountain View Farm, to announce the relocation of the Cape Breton Farmer’s Market supported by federal funding.

I’m so pleased that the federal government has provided $985,000 of funding to assist the Cape Breton Farmer’s Market in their move to Sydney’s downtown. This new, central location will provide so many opportunities for growth for all the market vendors, not to mention the great opportunity to showcase more local products to tourists,” said Eyking.

“We have worked very hard over the past few years to ensure that the new permanent location would be one that ticked all the boxes.  This is a win for everyone; we are very excited to begin this new chapter.  Without the financial assistance provided by ACOA and the support of the local office, this relocation would not have been possible.  We would also like to thank Mr. Eyking for his help in making this project a reality,” said Singer.

The Cape Breton Farmer’s Market is the only year-round Farmer’s Market on Cape Breton Island, with over 65 full-time and part-time vendors. The not-for-profit Market relies fully on table fees and fundraising to operate, and does not receive municipal or provincial funding. The move will allow the organization to significantly cut operating costs.

In addition, the Market is working to reduce their environmental impact with the installation in their new location of energy efficient lighting and heating systems. They will now operate as a “Market Store” during the week with increased customer traffic.
